Proudly marketed in collaboration with our partner agents Dafydd Hardy, Caernarfon.

Some words from our long standing owner below.

Ty Du is listed in the Inventory of the Royal Commission as the most important domestic building in the parish of Llanberis. It probably began life as a platform house in the 13th century but was rebuilt as a storied house in the early seventeenth century. It is now a ruined shell, but the walls rise to eaves level. Two ruined cottage’s are attached at the eastern gable and there is another ruined cottage 40 yards to the west, there is a ruined Smithy and what used to be a small shop within the half acre of the site.

HISTORY
The house belonged to the Goodman Family of Ruthin and in 1650 Godfrey Goodman (the Bishop of Gloucester) was banished there by Oliver Cromwell for his High Church leanings. In the 18th century a man called Yates lived there and was regarded as North Wales’s strongest man ! At the beginning of of the 19th century the well known local poet Dewi Arfon lived for twenty years in the house.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
Though ruined the property has many important surviving features. The A frame roof and many other timbers have been saved and are stored at the current owners house on Anglesey. The fireplace with oven and interesting graffiti and a spiral stair survive and all the window openings are original, as is the front door opening. The large stones in the plinth are clearly visible, and at the back of the house is the ancient pack horse trail from Llanberis to Caernarfon.

AMINITY
Ty Du lies in a sheltered hollow in the foothills of Snowdon. From the back of the building, one can walk to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) without crossing a public road. There are lovely walks in all directions with much natural diversity and interesting industrial archaeology
